This thread peaked my interest as I am all about self propagating plants and a friend is in need of some fruit trees so I thought would try air layering my lemon tree. I will let you know how I go.

Im not fully grasping this concept. So my understanding is this will produce new roots within the soil of the bottle which you can cut off and plant in the ground?

Thats right Charlie, if you want more details of how to do it then read page one of the tread, the only catch with citrus is that you get a clone of the fruiting part of the parent tree with out the disease free properties of the root stock.

I think for the backyard grower not having specialised root stock wold be OK. :dunno:

:sad2: No, I potted the lemon and no roots had grown in three months, I am going to try again with a lime closer to spring, I think the tree might need a good strong flush of growth to put demand on the semi-ring barked section to send out roots. Because I tried this with a lemon in the colder months the tree was dormant and the thin strip of back I left on the section was enough to keep it alive without sending out roots.

Standby for further updates I have not given up yet.
