Perhaps I will work on other areas first. So far the leach drain is working and will have to consider alternatives if and when the need arise, thanks all for the input.

$10000 buys a nice solar system

Realistically there is no difference between the output of a septic/leachdrain or an atu system if they are managed properly and you watch what you put in. Environmentally, other than the water saving from reusing on your garden (although you are limited to what you are allowed to grow on it - no food) I would say an atu system is far worse than a leach drain due to the energy input.

Both put excess nutrients into the ground if you don't have some type of deep rooted plants and ground cover using them. This is why I can not for the life of me understand why growing citrus on all effluent outflow areas is not advocated. Government Departments are so concerned about a$$e saving that they actually pohibit it - stupidity at it's bes  t.

Well here was I thinking that today I would finalise the xmas shopping, when I hear gurgle, gurgle, gurgle! I gave the occupant of the shower a hurry up, not before he realised the bathtub was filling and the whole bathroom floor was flooded :bad:
Next step, out with the shovel, phone a plumber and research wastewater treatment systems again.
I would still like a blackwater treatment system if feasible?
Have taken your advice Mike and rung Gary, hope to talk to him later today.
