Altbier, its a German style top fermented Ale brewed at lower temps....I think. Himzo might be able to explain it further, I've had little to do with them.

Sorry Himzo, I could only add 10 options, so I tried to capture the more mainstream styles.

Pretty much what Dave said... some good reading on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altbier

I use the yeast because it has a wide temperature tolerance, it doesnt drop out of suspension as quickly as some others so really does benefit from lagering for a couple of weeks at low temperature. The traditional ones from the Dusseldorff area are a bit darker than I like, so I have come up with my own recipe which gives me something in colour similar to an light amber ale.
